Twitter Local Trends Goes Live for All Users

Have you set up Twitter Local Trends or your Twitter Account?

What is is, you might ask? It is twitter’s way of tracking your location – and then using that information to provide you with more specific trending data so that you can watch what’s happening in your own locality. Pretty interesting, really.

Wonder why Twitter is so interested in having all that local data?

Here are a few articles that help summarize some ideas behind it all (Mashable: Twitter Local Trends and Mashable: Why Twitter Wants to Know Where You Are , but I think it’s safe to say that local trending social media is here to stay – and, as Mashable indicates, may be the ‘break out’ social media trend of 2010. The possibilities for the information are pretty much endless and we are just starting to see companies like Twitter, Foursquare and Google displaying some ways that local data can and will be used to provide more relevant information and to target marketing and advertising more effectively. Fascinating.

If you’re city is not listed on Twitter Local Trends yet, don’t worry, in their words, they’re, “working on it.”
